The Young Falcons Aviation Academy

Instruction on various aspects of Aviation is undertaken by the Academy.

These areas include Air Traffic Control, Flight Technology and Theory,
Engineering Principles, Flight Procedures and the History of Flight.

Stephen Hoy discussing the control surfaces.

With the assistance of a squadron provided by Yak South Africa, aircraft are used to explain
control surfaces, instrumentation and other flight principles.

Dion van der Merwe introducing a very excited youngster to the cockpit.

A Local Area Network incorporating 10 computers, each equipped with headsets and control systems allows the students to fly together in the same virtual world. Actual procedures are introduced, and a full Air Traffic Control System enables the introduction of basic Flight Planning, radio procedures and actual ATC.

Instruction and assistance is by the Academy volunteers from the South African Aviation Foundation and Cape Virtual. Assistance and support is provided by ATNS, Navigation School, the SA Air Force Museum Ysterplaat,
35 and 22 Squadron.

Simulators are used to introduce advanced flight procedures, and instrument training.
These assist with the 'suspension of disbelief' and many an aspiring pilot has had to be helped
from the simulators due to the extreme pressure and concentration required to complete an objective!
